Make snacks of fruit and veggies and take them with you. More nutritious less expensive. 16/01/2010 23:23 robbie: carry snacks with him 14/01/2010 00:29 scooter: do a big cook up on the weekend, place food in separate containers and put in freezer. when you cant be bothered cooking, take the container out of the freezer and zap in microwave, wala, no cost, healthy, and if its in a plastic container, throw it out for easy no dishes or wash and reuse to cut down on restocking containers. I split them up into "meal-sized" portions and freeze them. This makes for a VERY easy dinner during the weekdays when I am tired and feel like I just can't muster the energy to "make" dinner. Also, I keep snack sized bags of non-perishable foods in the car and some fruits. This stops the temptation to go to a drive-thru when the kids are hungry. I've found some great protein bars for quick breakfasts, too (our family likes the Clif Builders Bars - 20g of protien). Samberly: For food savings, buy a 4-ingredient cookbook. You can always find a few easily-repeatable recipes that you wont' mind cooking, and it will really cut down on take out bills. Try buying ground beef, grilling it while making pasta, and then combining the beef in a good pre-made pasta sauce. When you're shopping, make a list and stick to, also dont go down that isle. Scott Rudolph: There are lots of inexpensive ways around most of this stuff, but some of it just takes a little planning and spending "time" not money. I don't know how old your kids are, but newspapers folded into pirate hats and swords cut of out of cardboard cost nothing to make and toted along to the park make an awesome time playing pirates, and if the kids help decorate and make them it becomes twice the fun cause they are spending time with mom. If your kids insist on video games, check out some of the free stuff on the net like bejewelled, or check out the bargain bins at walmart and game stores, can find some good ones at discount prices. If your kids are like my daughter, they love McD's, so make it a special thing, i.e. every other saturday you do McD's followed by a trip to the park or a swim, or a hike, it gets them out in the fresh air and burns off some of the stuff they ate. 16/06/2010 15:24
